Action Plan

Action Plan for Assessing Key Competencies

Hook

From my unit application letter:
“I believe that the Key Competencies are central to everything we do in school and in life and their importance is often overlooked in our busy teaching and learning schedule.
I would like to carry out research, including trialing a variety of self, peer and teacher assessments in my own classroom first.  Successful strategies could then be shared and built on in other classrooms.
My goal is to formulate a key competency assessment strategy that is simple, useful and empowering to students.”

Key Tasks
Time

Wondering, Exploring
I want to find out:
·       what resources are on tki
·       what other schools are doing in the assessment of the competencies
·       how the competencies can be broken down into concepts that are meaningful to students
·       different types of graphic ways where students can assess themselves
·       how to make the assessment useful for students
·       if some of the previous trials I’ve used and see if they can be resurrected / improved
·       how the competencies can be used in student goal setting

End of Term 2

Publish on Key Comp blog

Act / Trial
·       Break down one of the key competencies which are involved in our team inquiry (ie Term 1: Managing self)

Before camp

·       Find the old key competency assessments trialled a couple of years ago.  Adapt them to managing self

End of Term 1

·       Use the main Term 2 key competency as a basis of next term’s goal setting

Early Term 2

Reflect
Assess progress against these criteria:
1.     Students should be able tell / show they are getting better at the competency
2.     It should be important students
3.     It must be easy for teachers to manage
4.     It shouldn’t be overly wordy (especially for the boys)
Draw some conclusions and recommend changes

End of Term 2

Publish on blog

Act / Trial / Reflect
·       Make changes as recommended
·       Continue trialling and improving systems
·       Put into a format which other teachers could use

During Term 3

So What?
·       Invite Skyscraper teachers to trial
·       Invite feedback

First half of Term 4
