Not particularly.
Kamil's mum has absolutely loved my original SDL programme. She uses it as a homework programme and is terribly conscientious about it.
The beginning of the year parent meetings were highly successful in that parents had a far better understanding of how the SDL programme works, and their role in it. I plan to repeat them next year.
Parents are very busy and are not necessarily motivated to spend hours after school working with their children on their tables, ensuring they read or practise their spelling.
I did an informal poll with all Poutama students around whether families sit around a table together to eat meals and was shocked to find how few did so. A handful eat together and talk. A few more sit at the table with the television on. Most sit wherever, generally in front of a television. Many don't eat together and either watch TV or play on their Play Station or other devices while they eat.
Here are some ways I would like parents to act in their role as primary educators:
- Talk and listen to your children
- Discuss ideas
- Read and enjoy books together
- Spend time practising basic facts and spelling
- Show children they are writers, readers, learners
- Make it their business to know what their child is learning
- Look at their ePortfolios and make regular comments
- Ensure children spend time outside, playing and having fun
- Encourage questions - but not of parental decisions
- Give children time without organised activity
- Get them into a team sport
- Have high expectations for learning and behaviour
- Encourage a love of learning
