SOLE is student driven research system, designed by Sugata Mitra.

In a SOLE, children have an initial motivation session – of about 10 minutes where they are presented with a question (which may be complex, but must be interesting) and given time to discuss, clarify, question as well as see videos, books or whatever is relevant – traditional teacher procedures.

In a SOLE, children have an initial motivation session – of about 10 minutes where they are presented with a question (which may be complex, but must be interesting) and given time to discuss, clarify, question as well as see videos, books or whatever is relevant – traditional teacher procedures.
Next they form groups of about four students, apart from two students who are appointed ‘student managers’. Those in groups spend about 40 minutes using the computers to research, and take notes. Meanwhile the student managers walk around the classroom, ensuring students are on task, helping them resolve problems etc. If any student needs to, they can move to another group at any stage. As the teacher is not involved in student management, she is free to observe, question or even record what is occurring.
At the conclusion of the research part, students then share what they have learnt and a brief discussion is held.
Finally, a discussion is held regarding issues, difficulties with any aspect of the SOLE. Videos of students working can also be analysed.
